Stellar Protocol 27 Zipper smart accounts

A new protocol is on the way

Stellar’s next protocol upgrade has a name: Zipper. The Stellar Development Foundation published the official upgrade guide on June 4, 2026. The testnet goes live on June 18, and the mainnet validator vote is set for July 8. If it passes, Zipper will change how wallets and smart accounts work on Stellar at a fundamental level.

So what does Zipper actually do?

At its core, Zipper makes authentication delegation a first-class feature on Stellar. In plain terms, one account can now officially authorize another account to act on its behalf. This opens the door to things like social recovery, where trusted contacts help you regain wallet access without a seed phrase. It also enables delegated signing and modular multisig, which means flexible multi-party approval setups. Furthermore, transactions become smaller and cheaper because all delegated signers bundle into a single authorization entry instead of requiring separate ones.

Why this is bigger than it sounds

Before Zipper, delegation existed on Stellar only as an accidental side effect. Developers who tried to use it faced a mess of manual steps, extra simulation passes, and bloated transaction sizes. As a result, most teams avoided it entirely. Zipper turns that workaround into a clean, supported tool. Additionally, it introduces a new credential type that prevents signature replay attacks between accounts that share private keys. This is a narrow but real security gap, and now it is closed.

This is just the beginning

Zipper is explicitly foundational. SDF has confirmed that Protocol 28 will bring contract-based authentication to classic Stellar accounts, the standard ones most users hold today. The delegation mechanism in Zipper is a direct prerequisite for that. So in a sense, what ships on July 8 is the engine that powers the next, more visible wave of wallet upgrades. The Stellar roadmap keeps moving forward, and each step builds on the last.

What it means for you right now

For everyday users, Zipper means safer and more flexible crypto accounts are coming. Meanwhile, if you want to trade in the Stellar ecosystem today, the Lumexo wallet offers fast, easy access to Stellar DEX trading, lending, and stablecoin holdings, all from a non-custodial app built on the same network that Zipper is about to make even better. The upgrade is almost here. It is a good time to be on Stellar.
